Transponder Keys
The majority of keys made for cars post 1995 are transponder keys. Transponder chips are used in these keys to disarm a vehicle’s immobilizer when the key is used for starting the engine. This leap in technology also means that when things go wrong, you need an expert help to fix them. Call an Orange Locksmith who is familiar with every type of key used today, including transponder keys. Technology is changing fast to meet new needs. Our technicians keep ahead of every new shift in design.
Transponder Keys – How do They Work?
When a transponder key is turned in the ignition, the car’s engine control unit (ECU) conveys an electronic message to the key. The car only starts if it has received the correct message. Even with a simple car key which does not have any buttons, the key has to be cut correctly so that it can do the job of turning the locks. It also has to be programmed correctly so that the immobilizer is disarmed.
Transponder keys have chips that have to be programmed with the use
of specialized equipment. You need the expert help from an Orange
Locksmith technician when these keys play up.
Some transponder keys do not need a constant electrical supply. They operate in the 125 kHz frequency range. The limitation in power means they will only work at a range of a few inches. These radio frequencies can pass through many types of materials and mean the transponder chip can be hidden right inside the key and so makes it more tamper proof..
Transponder keys work by sending a signal to the car’s ignition system. They get their power when the key is turned in the lock. Their signal is sent in an alphanumeric code form. The sequence of letters and numbers works like any code and is unique for that key and lock. The ignition system only responds with the correct code.
The use of transponders for car security systems is not always as foolproof as you might think. The immobilizer systems often recall the previous key code for such a long period that they could even accept a non-transponder key just after having removed the current key from the ignition.
